Best cycling destinations in Vietnam

1. Cycle the Hon Giao Pass
Take on the Hon Giao Pass (1,700m) on our Cycle Saigon to Hanoi tour - a cycling challenge worth celebrating. The ascent takes you through lush green pine forests and across the dramatic mountain scenery. After a well deserved rest you’ll experience the exhilarating twists and turns of the virtually uninterrupted 30 kilometre descent.

2. Explore the Mekong Delta
The best way to explore the lush fertile plains of the Mekong Delta is on two wheels. The small villages with stilt houses are dotted throughout this complex network of waterways. The Mekong provides an abundant harvest including coconuts, fruits, rice and of course fish. Most of our Vietnam tours include the Mekong Delta, including our Cycle Vietnam and Cambodia trip.

3. Cycle around Hue
The Imperial City of Hue and surrounding countryside has much to offer, especially when explored by bike. Cycle along the Perfume River on our Cycle Vietnam tour and discover the iconic Thien Mu Pagoda, home of the oldest monastery in the city whose 21m high tower has become a symbol for Hue.

Cycling through the leafy backstreets and out into the countryside you can visit the Ho Quyen amphitheatre, where the emperor presided over duels between tigers and elephants, and the complex and ornate temples, pavilions and tombs built beside a picturesque lake at the 19th century Nguyen Tomb of Tu Duc.

The gentle ascent of Vong Canh Hill rewards you with spectacular views. From the pine forest atop the hill you can look over the Perfume River and the surrounding countryside and tombs of the Nguyen dynasty.

What to expect on a cycling tour in Vietnam

When is the best time to go on a cycling holiday in Vietnam?
Vietnam is a long, narrow country and from north to south climate conditions vary considerably. Generally, the best time of year to go cycling in Vietnam is between October and February when the temperature is cooler and the rainy season is over. A light rain jacket is recommended year round.

How challenging are cycling holidays in Vietnam?
Our cycling holidays in Vietnam are graded either Easy or Moderate. Easy rides have a relaxed pace and are suitable for anyone that enjoys easy and relatively short rides on flat or gently undulating terrain. If you have a reasonable level of fitness and are used to undulating routes with occasional energetic climbs then you’ll suit a Moderate grade cycle trip.

What will the group be like on a cycling holiday in Vietnam?

As with any holiday group, every one is different, so it’s impossible to tell, but an ‘average’ group consists of roughly half couples and half solo cyclists. There's usually a real mix of ages, and typically half male and half female. If you'd like to know more about the group make up on a particular departure, speak to one of our sales consultants. They'll be able to share the rough demographics of the group, and split of solos and couples.

What do I need to bring on a Vietnam cycling tour?
You’ll need to bring your own bike helmet, as these are not supplied. We also highly recommend packing some padded shorts, as you’ll appreciate these after several days of cycling! Cycle gloves are always a good idea and we suggest bringing at least one water bottle and a small rucksack to wear on your back while you cycle, to contain a waterproof jacket, camera, food and drinks. All of your main luggage will be transported for you in the support vehicle.

What will the food be like on a cycling tour in Vietnam?
Vietnamese food is fresh, fragrant, delicious and offered from a range of venues, from food stalls and street kitchens to restaurants serving quality cuisine. Try the staple noodle soup Pho or the Hanoi speciality Bun Cha.
